Medicaid
Medicaid is intended to provide medical assistance to the elderly, blind, and disabled poor. In order to qualify for Medicaid, the applicant must meet at least three criteria:

the applicant must require skilled nursing service and be a resident of, or have a move-in date at, a skilled nursing facility approved by Medicaid.

the applicant's income cannot exceed $2,022 per month.

the applicant's countable assets cannot exceed $2,000, and the applicant's spouse's countable assets cannot exceed $109,560.

Medicare
Medicare is intended to provide medical coverage for the
elderly, disabled, and those with end stage renal disease. Medicare is divided into Parts A, B, C, and D, as follows:
- Part A: usually provided to those with a qualifying number of quarters of employment, but is also available to others who pay a premium. It covers skilled nursing home facilities and hospitals.
- Part B: usually provided to those who pay a premium. It covers outpatient care, therapy, and home care.
- Part C: combination of Parts A and B, and is provided through private insurance companies.
- Part D: prescription drug insurance for which most people have to pay a premium. It covers prescription drugs.
